Civil Rights activist and Nation of Islam leader Malcolm X is shown addressing a large crowd in 1963 Harlem, New York. The Muslim minister dons his trademark horn-rimmed glasses and gazes out from the podium at an integrated crowd gathered in the street before him. 1963 was a pivotal year for Malcolm X and his followers, as X began to reassess his relationship with Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam. One of the main breaks occurred after Elijah Muhammad refused Malcolm X’s request to allow the Nation of Islam to align with other Civil Rights leaders and organizations. His formal break with Elijah Muhammad would come in 1964, followed by his assassination in 1965. This Type 1 photo measures and shows light toning and soft corners. The reverse of the photo contains the original caption slug/credits affixed along with handwritten production notations. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
