This tremendous portrait of John F. Kennedy was taken at a the first crucial, world-changing moment of his presidency. The date was July 25, 1961, and the President was seated in the Oval Office facing TV cameras and radio microphones to address the world on the ongoing Berlin Crisis. A month earlier in June, Kennedy had been given an ultimatum by Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev demanding all Western armed forced to be removed from Berlin. This came at a critical time for the Soviet Bloc countries as many of their best minds had been steadily fleeing west, most taking the route through East to West Berlin. Khrushchev gave Kennedy six months to withdraw US troops from West Berlin. As Kennedy was new to the presidency, the world was not sure how he would hold up in the face of Khrushchev’s bold move. The world found out on July 25, 1961. JFK held firm, countering the Soviet threats by announcing the activation of 150,000 reservists and a significant increasing in spending on defense projects. This original photograph was taken at the White House and captures the young president’s resolve in the face of the first global crisis he had to address as the leader of the free world.
