This Type 1 photo depicts Sandy Koufax on the mound at Chicago’s Wrigley Field during the April 24, 1962, game in which he struck out 18 Cubs, equaling Bob Feller’s nine-inning record set in 1938, and matching his own personal best from three seasons earlier. Sandy allowed just six hits in his complete game 3-1 victory. Up to this point in his career, the lefthander had a .500 career record. This historic game would mark the beginning of a remarkable stretch in which he would win three Cy Young Awards, three Triple Crowns, and a NL MVP Award. Though taken during the game, the photographer masterfully captured Koufax mid-windup in such a way that he is the only player visible in the frame. The Type 1 photo measures 8” x 10” and has nice white borders. The well-composed image is sharp and has good contrast. The reverse bears a “APR 25, 1962” date stamp, “Sandy Koufax” in blue pencil, and various handwritten notations. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA and graded Type 1 Authentic.
