In just its second season in Brazil's top flight, Santos FC celebrated its 50th anniversary golden jubilee with a magical ride few could ever have imagined. The 1962 Santos squad, nicknamed "Os Santásticos" (The Santastics), had arguably the most accomplished club campaign of all time, winning the Campeonato Brasileiro (Série A), Campeonato Paulista, Copa Libertadores, and Intercontinental Cup to complete the vaunted "quadruple". 22-year-old Pelé would became a global superstar, but he wasn't even the team's leading scorer. That went to 18-year-old striker Coutinho who tallied 65 goals in 52 matches (Pelé scored 64 in 54 matches). The loaded roster included many of the same players who carried the Brazil National Team to back-to-back 1958 and 1962 World Cup triumphs such as left winger Pepe, midfielder Zito (captain), defender Mauro Ramos, and goalkeeper Gilmar. Fresh to the hobby comes one of the finest Pelé match worn Santos FC jerseys ever to surface, hailing from the glorious '62 season immortalized in football history.
In 1956 Pelé signed his first professional contract with Santos at the age of 15, followed a year later by his first call-up with Seleção. He would later become the only footballer ever to win three World Cups and he remains Brazil's career scoring leader with 77 goals in 91 caps. But what endeared Pelé most to his native fans was that he stayed loyal to his homeland and the club that signed him as a young teen, playing for Santos until 1974. He finished his legendary club career with 643 goals in 659 appearances and won a combined 24 titles in the '60's alone.
The creamy-white home model shirt comes with long sleeves with an open collar and ribbed sleeve-ends. Tagged within collar by longtime Brazilian textile company Hering, it holds a vintage "Heringol" label (no size) indicating 100% cotton. The vintage “S.F.C.” team crest patch (with a unique, rarely seen soccer ball symbol) is embroidered on the left chest in black. The famous number “10” is sewn on the back in twill fabric. The jersey displays ample wear throughout with mix of sweat staining and spot soiling and heavily frayed threads on the back numerals. Pelé has signed the front with the greeting "Do amigo" (Your friend) in black pen, adding even more value to this museum-worthy relic from the greatest season of his legendary career.
Authentication & Provenance
Letters of Authenticity from MEARS for the jersey and PSA/DNA for the autograph. Letter of provenance from Brazilian center-back Joel Camargo, who played alongside Pelé with the Brazil National Team and Santos FC. The two remained friends long after their playing careers. Camargo passed away in 2014.
