Tim McCarver was a standout backstop for the Cardinals in the 1960's and 1970's helping the club (as co-captain despite his age) to three pennants and two World Series titles in the '60's. The only catcher ever to lead the league in triples he finished his long and illustrious career as Steve Carlton's personal battery mate during which time the Phillies captured three consecutive division championships. Today he is best known as baseball's top color commentator on television. Offered is a St. Louis Cardinals road jersey that McCarver wore in the early 1960's. This cream-colored flannel jersey features the Cardinals distinctive embroidered team logo across the front with his No. "15" appearing on the left front breast and on the reverse. "McCarver" is on the reverse directly above the number. All letters and numbers are in red with blue trim. A "Rawlings 42" label is situated on the left front tail while a flag tag reading "Set 1 1962" appears along the interior left front tail directly adjacent to a wash tag. The jersey which is original and unaltered is lightly toned and displays game wear throughout including a few light stains along the front. A single button of the seven down the front is missing the third from the bottom. The two-time All-Star has added an attractive black marker autograph to the right front of the jersey below the "Cardinals" script adding his No. 15 inscription. Though McCarver did not appear for the Cardinals in 1962 the following year he became the everyday catcher where he continued for the remainder of the decade. Although he may have been called up at season's end in 1962 (and never played) it is more likely that this jersey which is tagged for 1962 was simply issued to McCarver the following season (not an uncommon practice at the time) using one of the many "spare" or "extra" jerseys that teams kept on hand for mid/late-season additions. This ultimately is an outstanding and extremely scarce early Tim McCarver St. Louis Cardinals jersey from the 1960's.
