Due to the fictional “biography” by imaginative sportswriter Al Stump Ty Cobb has gone down in history as leading a lonely life in retirement. Recent scholarship has proven that to be very untrue--aging Cobb had many close friends--and this handwritten 1958 letter is case-in-point. Dated September 28 1958 Cobb’s letter to his friend Walter Phillips talks of his building a new home in Lake Tahoe and how he missed seeing his friend in Nevada. Cobb also talks about how he would not be attending that year's World Series between the Yankees and Braves mentioning how he has “seen many” and how television relieves him of the long journey across the country to see the game in person.
The letter is written in Cobb's trademark green ink on an 8.5" by 11" sheet of the Georgia Peach's personal letterhead bearing his Nevada country club address. The Hall of Famer ends the letter with a flowing “Sincerely Ty Cobb” complete with his dynamic under-flourish. The writing and signature rate a consistent 8/10 in boldness and eye appeal. The letter exhibits some edge wear and toning as well as folds from mailing and storage. It comes with its original mailing envelope (postmarked 9/28/1958) showing edge wear and unrelated pencil notations.
Also included is a pink mailing receipt (EX-MT) for a 1961 package (sent by Phillips) signed by Cobb in 9/10 blue ballpoint. An interesting double-signed set of correspondence from Cobb’s last years in retirement consigned by the son of this same friend of Cobb's.
Includes 2 LOA's from PSA/DNA.
