Edson Arantes do Nascimento signed his first professional contract in 1956 at the age of 15 with Brazilian club Santos FC. The following year, the football legend known only as Pelé made his first appearance with the Brazil National Team. During his prolific international career, Pelé won three FIFA World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970) – the only player ever to do so – and retired as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 91 caps. His 1,283 combined goals for club and country seem almost unfathomable.
Presented here is one of the earliest Pelé Brazil match-worn jerseys we’ve ever handled, dating to the talented teenager’s first full year with Seleção in 1958 when the proud football nation hoisted its first Jules Rimet trophy. The short-sleeved cotton shirt comes in the classic canary yellow home style with an open green collar and ribbed green sleeve-ends. It has an early CBD (Confederação Brasileira de Desportos or Brazil Sports Confederation) crest embroidered on the left chest, with his famous number “10” on the back in green. Tagged by Rio-based manufacturer Ceppo, the label reads “Superball” and indicates a size “REG” within the inner collar. Ample wear is present throughout with pilling to the cotton fabric, frayed back numbers, and a large sweat stain on the left shoulder. The shirt has been wonderfully preserved with the colors still vibrant. Pelé has signed the front (“Edson = Pelé”) in blue pen, adding even more value to this museum-worthy piece of history.
Authentication & Provenance
Letters of Authenticity from MEARS for the jersey and PSA/DNA for the autograph. Letter of provenance from Brazilian center-back Joel Camargo, who played alongside Pelé with Brazil and Santos FC. The two remained friends long after their playing careers. Camargo passed away in 2014.
