Few figures in Yankees history burned as brightly, or as famously, as Billy Martin. This 1957 Topps issue captures the fiery second baseman in pinstripes, presented here in sharp PSA NM-MT 8 condition.

The 1957 Topps set was the company’s first in the modern 2-1/2" by 3-1/2" size and the first to feature true color photography. Its clean, classic design has made it a perennial favorite with vintage collectors. Card #62 carries special significance, since it is among the last cards to picture Martin as a Yankee. In June 1957, weeks after the infamous Copacabana nightclub incident, the club traded him to the Kansas City Athletics, ending his playing days in New York.

His legacy in pinstripes was already secure. Martin made the season-saving catch of Jackie Robinson’s bases-loaded pop-up in Game 7 of the 1952 World Series. A year later he was named World Series MVP, collecting 12 hits and driving in the Series-clinching run in Game 6. He earned an All-Star selection in 1956. His story with the franchise continued decades later through five separate stints as Yankees manager.
