The late Ken Boyer played 15 seasons in the major leagues from 1955 to 1969 the first 11 of which were spent competing for the St. Louis Cardinals. He posted a career batting average of .287 on his way to collecting 2143 hits including 282 home runs. A five-time Gold Glove award winner Boyer was named the National League MVP in 1964 when he led the Redbirds to the World Series title after batting .295 with 24 home runs and a league-leading 119 runs batted in.

The fact that the jersey features Boyer's name stitched in the tail along with the "X" indicates that the club originally ordered it as an extra for him.
