The 1956 USC Trojans football team coached by Jess Hill bested the Longhorns of Texas in the season opener 44-20. The game was played in the shadow of the Lone Star capitol dome before a crowd of 47000 mostly dumb-struck Texans. Dumb struck by virtue of a one-man wrecking crew from USC named C.R. Roberts. The bruising 207-pound fullback gained 251 yards on the ground and scored three touchdowns to pace the Trojans attack. This lot includes a multi-signed game-used Rawlings football from the game. The football holds 54 signatures in spotty black ink from several players from USC including Co-Captain Marv Goux Jon Arnett Ernie Zampese and Karl Rubke. The USC coaches who signed this football include Don Clark Nick Papas Mel Hein and Bill Fisk. Many of the signatures have faded over time so overall the autographs would rate 6-7/10 in our book. The lot includes a complete issue of the Oct. 1 1956 edition of Sports Illustrated magazine which contains an article on the game written by James Murray as well as a short sidebar written about C.R. Roberts.
