Presented here is a bronze winner's medal from the 1956 Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia – the first Olympiad held in the Southern Hemisphere. Made of pure bronze, it measures 51 mm in diameter and weighs 64 grams. Designed by Giuseppe Cassioli of Italy, it was minted by K.G. Luke. The obverse is inscribed "XVIth OLYMPIAD MELBOURNE 1956" and features a seated Goddess of Victory with the Colosseum in the background. The reverse depicts a winner being carried by jubilant athletes. This winner’s medal design was adopted from the version made for the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Games, the only difference being a change in wording to reflect the year and location. There were 290 of these bronze medals struck, and this is the first 1956 Melbourne bronze we’ve ever had the privilege of offering. It shows light to moderate wear from age and handing. Overall, it remains in excellent shape with just some minor toning. The event and recipient are unknown.
