In addition to the Gold Silver and Bronze medals awarded at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics the top six finishers in each event were presented with a diploma certificate. This one was awarded to Elenor Gordon of Great Britain for her sixth place finish in the 200 meter women’s breaststroke. Gordon represented Great Britain in three summer Olympics winning a bronze at the 1952 Helsinki Games. Printed on letterpress on ivory paper the diploma incorporates the coat of arms of the City of Melbourne with its motto “Vires Acquirit Eundo” upon which “DIPLOMA OLYMPIC GAMES MELBOURNE 1956” is printed. “SIXTH” (Gordon’s finishing rank “SWIMMING-200 M. BREASTSTROKE WOMEN” and “H. GORDON” is printed below. The diploma carries the facsimile signatures of Avery Brundage the Right Honourable R. G. Menzies and the Honourable W. S. Kent Hughes. Measuring 17 ½” x 23” the certificate shows edge wear and overall toning from age. One of only 4000 issued to the top finishers at the 1956 Melbourne Games.
