There are not many things more thrilling than a grand slam home run – except when it is hit in the World Series! And that is exactly what this photograph captures. The date is October 4, and it is the 5th game of the 1953 World Series. After taking the first two games, the Yankees dropped the next two to the Dodgers, evening the series at 2-all. Game 5 had Brooklyn’s Johnny Podres facing New York’s Jim McDonald. The Yanks knocked Podres out of the box in the third after he gave up 5 runs. His replacement, Russ Meyer, took the mound with the bases loaded and Mickey Mantle at the plate. The Mick promptly hit a long fly ball to deep left field. This gave the Yanks a 6-1 lead in their eventual 11-6 win. This photo captures the exciting moment of joy when Mantle is mobbed by his teammates in from of their dugout. Adding to the beauty of the moment captured in this print is Mickey Mantle’s majestic signature in bright blue marker rarely seen on an original photo especially in the early years. The print shows no issues to report with very minor toning and the reverse has the original Associated Press caption slug affixed. This photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA and an LOA.
