Here then is a remarkable artifact from the legendary Johnny Sain a member of the Yankee's famed pitching staff during much of that fabled five-year run of World Series titles from 1949-53 and later a pitching coach of considerable renown in the 1960's and 1970's including a stint with the Yankees at the end of yet another dynasty from 1961-63. In the earliest years of his career with the Boston Braves teams from 1946 to 1951 he teamed with Hall of Famer Warren Spahn to form a poem-worthy pitching duo leading the Braves to an improbable pennant in 1948. He was the runner-up for the National League's Most Valuable Player Award in that pennant-winning season leading the National League in wins complete games and innings pitched. The spectacular road flannel jersey has Spalding label on the back of the collar with adjacent flap tag of "46"; a grey felt patch with "J. Sain 1951-2" in navy blue chain stitch is directly beneath. On the inside left tail is the wash instructions tag. Across the from is "New York" sewn in blue felt and on the back Sain's No. 11 in the same fashion. On the left sleeve is the New York Yankees "50th Year 1903-1952" patch likely applied in the year after. The jersey shows game-use and without alterations of any kind.
