Mickey Owen was an solid catcher during his 13-year career having been selected to the National League All-Star team on four occasions. Despite his fine accomplishments however he will forever live in the annals of baseball history for his costly dropped third strike in Game 4 of the 1941 World Series. Unfortunately for Owen that famous miscue eventually led to the Dodgers losing both the game and ultimately the Series. Offered is an extremely attractive Chicago Cubs road jersey worn by the hard-luck catcher in the 1950 season. The gray zipper front road flannel jersey is lettered "Chicago" across the chest with the team name underscored in red braid. The number "12" is on the reverse. All letters and numbers are in blue felt. A "Wilson" label and adjacent "46" size tag appear on the front-left tail as does a washing instructions tag; below that "1950" has been chain stitched in blue with some slight loss of stitching but the year still easily identified. "Owen/2" has been chain stitched in blue on a gray felt patch on the collar. The jersey which is original and unaltered exhibits game use; the front zipper is still working but there is about four inches of separation in the stitching to the front at the bottom. This is an outstanding and highly desirable Chicago Cubs "style" jersey worn by one a key figure in World Series history.
