This is an absolutely stunning artifact from one of the early star NBA players during the rough-and-tumble years of the 1950's when the league was in its infancy and had franchises in many (relatively) small Eastern and Midwest cities like Rochester Syracuse and Fort Wayne. This jacket was worn by Paul Seymour a feisty 6-2 guard for the Nationals was the captain of their 1955 National Basketball Association championship team and a former coach. He averaged 8.6 points a game for his professional career with his finest season being 1955 when he averaged 14.6 points a game and 6.7 assists for the Syracuse team that won the 1955 N.B.A. title. He served as coach of the Nationals from 1956 to 1960 and coached the St. Louis Hawks to a Western Division title in 1961. The jacket is nothing short of sensational with Size 48 tagging on the collar from Coane of Philadelphia and a second tag from Joe Charles Fairmount Sport Shop Inc. the local distributor in Syracuse. The red satin jacket has black-and-gold piping on the collar sleeves and pockets all of which is in superior condition along with Seymour's No. 5 on the shoulder. The delicate embroidery of Syracuse Nats on the squared-off upper-back trim which is reminiscent of the back flaps made famous by the Harlem Globetrotters. Truly a wonderful piece from an important period of early NBA history.
