George V. Blake of Chicago started his boxing officiating career in San Diego at the turn of the century then took over in September 1908 for Tommy Walsh as the referee of preliminary bouts in Vernon California. In August 1909 he started refereeing amateur bouts at the Los Angeles Athletic Club and by 1910 he had become a popular and respected referee in the greater Los Angeles area. By the early 1920s he was the regular referee for Southern California boxing venues such as Jack Doyle's Vernon Arena and the Hollywood Legion Stadium. Some of the title bouts Blake officiated included Max Schmeling vs. Young Stribling Henry Armstrong vs. Jimmy Garrison Henry Armstrong vs. Baby Arizmendi Joe Louis vs. Jack Roper and Jimmy McLarnin vs. Young Corbett III. This lot includes a specially designed trophy that was awarded to Blake in 1949 from the Loyola Club for his impact on the sport of boxing. Uniquely designed the wooden trophy stands 13 tall and measures 11 across. It includes a seven-inch0tall bronze boxer positioned in front of a large plaque that reads: To George V. Blake In Recognition of His Outstanding Influence in Boxing and Athletics Throughout Southern California Loyola Club 1949.
