Rare 1949 Hage's Ice Cream pair of cards featuring Padre catcher John Ritchey the first African-American player in the history of the San Diego padres and the Pacific Coast league. The same year that Jackie Robinson integrated the major leagues Ritchey signed a contract with the San Diego Padres in late 1947 and officially integrated the Pacific Coast League. In 1947 Ritchey had led the Negro American League with a .369 batting average as a member of the Chicago American Giants. He made his Pacific Coast League debut in March of 1948 and produced a 4 HR 44 RBI a .323 Average .405 OBP and .442 SLG. in 103 games for the Padres. He played a total of 7 seasons in the PCL playing with the Portland Beavers Sacramento Solons and San Francisco Seals in addition to the San Diego Padres. At the beginning of the 2005 season the San Diego Padres unveiled a bust of Ritchey at San Diego's Petco Park. Cards one brownish tint and the other blue both have the same full body catching pose. Both are very clean with sharp photographic images. The blue tint appears to be EX-MT while the brown looks to be EX+. Both measure about 3 1/8" by 2 9/16". Outstanding pair of cards from the first African-American player in the history of the Pacific Coast League!
