This atmospheric Type 1 photograph captures Satchel Paige’s first appearance as a Major League pitcher at Comiskey Park. Paige had pitched at Comiskey many times before when he was in the Negro Leagues, most notably in the East-West All-Star Games held every year in Chicago. But Friday night, August 13, 1948, was different — now he was part of the integration of our National Pastime. The great Satchel Paige did not disappoint. 51,013 fans watched Paige pitch a complete game, 5-hit shutout, to bring his season record to a perfect 6-0. The overflow crowd forms the background of his historic photograph. The front of the Type 1 photo shows some edge wear, and there is a tear on the upper border that intrudes slightly into the image. The photo has taken on a nice patina with age and displays nicely. The back of the photo has several credit stamps and a handwritten pencil notation reading, “Satchel Paige on mound at Comiskey Park appearing first time on mound for Cleveland Indians.” The photo has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA and graded a Type 1 AUTHENTIC.
