The Dodgers’ rookie catcher Roy Campanella strikes a heroic pose in this 1948 Type I press photo. With fabled Ebbets Field providing the backdrop Campy displays all the confidence you would expect from the man who would soon win three NL MVP Awards and help lead the Dodgers to five pennants and the team’s sole World Championship. Besides his potent bat Campanella’s much-needed stability and experience helped the Dodgers pitching corps become the most dominant in the league. Though he was a “rookie” in 1948 Campanella had spent eight years in the Negro National League where he learned all the skills that would enable him to hit the ground running by the time he suited up for this picture.
Certainly one of the finest photographs of Roy Campanella in existence. The front of the photo shows just light wear and toning from age. The reverse features United Press Newspictures Acme Newspictures and United Press International stamps as well as “Roy Campanella 1948” handwritten in pencil. The 7” x 9” photograph has been encapsulated and graded Type I by PSA.
