Satchel Paige’s 1948 debut with the Cleveland Indians was a milestone for both baseball history and racial equality. Paige had been pitching in the Negro Leagues for more than two decades before Bill Veeck, Jr. brought him to Cleveland. Before that, most baseball fans had heard of the great Satchel, but because of the color barrier, they were denied the chance to see him in action. Bill Veeck, Jr. rectified that in 1948. The great Satchel did not disappoint — the 41-year-old “rookie” went 6-1 for the Indians with a nice 2.48 ERA. What’s more, Paige had helped Cleveland win their first pennant since 1920, giving millions more fans the chance to see him when he pitched in the World Series. This portrait photo of Satchel Paige was included in the Indians team-issued picture pack. As it is a “rookie card” of sorts, it is by far the most sought-after photo in the set. This example has survived in excellent condition and is a choice example of this desirable issue. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA who have graded this piece EX 5.
