What could be better than being a catcher for a semi-pro team in the Bronx back in the 1940s and getting the chance to ply your trade in the Polo Grounds, home to the New York Giants? How about taking home a game used bat of one of the greatest sluggers of all-time? That the memory and souvenir Anthony Neste’s father had from his day at the Polo Grounds. Neste was playing for a local independent team when he was given one of Met Ott’s game used bats after his game at the Polo Grounds. The bat had been a Neste family heirloom up until it was sold at auction in 2022. Mel Ott was one of the greatest hitters in the history of baseball, he was the first National Leaguer to join the 500 Home Run Club, led the league in homers six times, and slugged the Giants to three pennants and a World Championship. This gamer dates to Ott’s last two seasons as a player, 1946-1947. The Hillerich & Bradsby Professional Model bat is uncracked and shows ball marks on the left, right, and back barrel. There are green bat rack paint streaks present and the bat has taken on a warm dark brown tone from age. The weight of 34.3 oz and 35 inch length correspond with Mel Ott’s bat ordering records from the 1946-1947 seasons. The bat comes with a letter of provenance from the original owner’s son and a LOA giving it a grade of GU 8.5 from PSA/DNA.
