Johnny Mize the burly first baseman for the Cards and Giants paced or tied for the National League lead in home runs four times hitting three in a single game on six occasions. He also won three RBI crowns and one batting championship. After the Big Cat joined the Yankees they won five straight World Series titles (1949-53) with Mize hitting three homers in the 1952 Fall Classic. He finished his career with 359 home runs and a .312 batting average. The offered New York Giants road pants are completely original and unaltered originating from the estate of former Giants player Lou Lombardo. Lombardo was 19 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 22 1948 with the New York Giants. These pants were likely acquired by him in the Giants minor league system. Lombardo only appeared in two games for the Giants in 1948 but retained these pants as issued to him along with a Giants road jersey that formerly belonged to Red Kress (see lot 547). These original gray pants with red and blue piping feature the name J.Mize embroidered in red below the Spalding tag in the rear waistband area. The pants show extensive usage wear including numerous large team repairs such as period patches and repaired tears. Includes a letter of provenance from the son of Lou Lombardo.
