The late Satchel Paige was not only one of the greatest Negro League pitchers who ever lived but one of Major League Baseball’s best hurlers ever. A right-hander he earned 100 victories while pitching in the NegroLeagues before becoming the oldest rookie pitcher in MLB history when at age 48 he joined the Cleveland Indians in 1948. As a full-fledged major leaguer he posted 28 victories over the course of five seasons while taking the hill for both the Indians (1948-49) and then the St. Louis Browns (1951-53).
This lot features a single-signed Official Negro American League baseball from Paige who autographed it on the south panel just below the sweet spot with the inscription “Best Wishes From.” The baseball appears a bit agedand soiled but Paige’s scrawl is crisp and clear in blue ink. It would rate a 8-9/10 in our book. The fact that Paige rendered this non-personalized vintage inscription in his prime and did so on such a rare and ideal medium makes this one of the finest single signed baseballs we've seen from this legend of the game.
