A handsome close-up photograph of the greatest racehorse of all-time: Man O' War. This 1939-dated Type 1 photo shows the 20-race winner in retirement at Faraway Farm outside Lexington, Kentucky. Man O’ War, who in 1920 shared the title of The New York Times outstanding athlete of the year with Babe Ruth, had retired and gone on to sire two other champion thoroughbreds, War Admiral and Clyde Van Deusen. This crisp, detailed image captures the champion in a stately head and shoulders portrait pose. The Type 1 photo measures 8 1/8” x 7 5/8” and has had the top white border trimmed away. The reverse of the photo has the original caption slug along with a 1939 date stamp and various hand written notations. Not many Type 1 photos of the famed thoroughbred exist, making this a much sought after piece by horse racing collectors. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
