Ernie Lombardi's 1938 National League MVP Sterling Silver Box Property From The Estate of Ernie Lombardi The legend of Lombardi's slowness afoot has blossomed through the years to have one believe that he may not only have been the slowest moving ballplayer but perhaps the slowest moving human - ever. According to legend he would routinely get thrown out on plays any other player would have been safe on. Lombardi's fans like to say he would have hit over .400 if he had had just ordinary speed. Whatever you believe "Schnoz" was clearly a slow-moving vehicle though he still managed to post some awe-inspiring numbers in spite of it. None more so than in his benchmark season of 1938. His circuit leading .342 average secured his first batting title complimented by 19 homers and 95 RBI. These numbers seeming all the more remarkable when you consider that as a catcher Lombardi only missed 22 games earned him baseball's highest individual honor. The wood lined cigarette box is adorned with the National League symbol on the lid above the inscription "To Ernie Lombardi Cincinnati Reds National League Most Valuable Player 1938." Near Mint condition. 7 1/2 in. by 3 1/2 in. by 1 1/8 in.
