Just like its big brother the U.S. Open the United States Amateur Championship is run by the USGA and traces its history back to 1895. Many of golf's greatest players shined on the amateur circuit before starring on tour most notably Jack Nicklaus Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. And then there was the legendary Bobby Jones who won five U.S. Amateur titles and four U.S. Opens between 1923 and 1930 while never officially turning pro.

This offered program stems from the 40th U.S. Amateur Championship held Sept. 14-19 1936 at Garden City Golf Club on Long Island (NY). After two rounds of stroke play the event converts to a 36-hole match-play format to decide the winner. American John Fischer won the '36 event in sudden death on the 37th hole defeating a Scot named Jack McLean. The standard 8.5x11 program contains 40 well-preserved pages and remains in EX condition overall with the only major blemish being a circular liquid stain on the top right of the front cover. Vintage U.S. Amateur programs are extremely scarce; the last '36 example we found sold for $1800 in 2006.
