This lot presents three medals from the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics including two different versions of the standard athlete participation medals and a "Stern-Flug" pilot's participation medal.
There are four different versions of athlete participation medals. The two offered here have the exact same design but come in slightly different colors. Made of bronze the obverse shows the Olympic bell embossed with the GermanEagle with designer "Otto Placzek" etched lower right. The reverse depicts anartistic layer of five athletes representing the five continentspulling the ropes of the Olympic Bell etched with "XI OLYMPIADE BERLIN1936". Each has a diameter of 70 mm and thickness of 3-4 mm. The golden-bronze colored medal has "GUSS - H.NOACK - BERLIN" etched on the bottom edge to give credit to one of the four production foundries that minted thesemedals; it weighs 112 grams and presents NM-MT. The slightly darker medal with some greenish patina has no such foundry etching; it weighs 118 grams and presents NM.
The third medal was issued to one of the pilots of the 600 or 700 planes that participated in the International Olympic Aviation Rally to the '36 Berlin Games. Made of cast bronze the obverse shows the Olympic bell embossed with the GermanEagle surrounded by "XI Olympiade Berlin 1936". The reverse depicts an eagle in high relief flying to the left with "INTERNATIONALER STERN-FLUG" below and designer "Otto Placzek" etched on the right. Diameter is 70 mm thickness is 3-4 mm and it weighs 138 grams. Presents NM-MT.
