Presented here is an Olympic bronze medal from the 1936 Berlin Summer Games. Any medal from Berlin is incredibly scarce and this lovely 3rd place winner's medal is certainly no exception. Only 320 bronze medals were minted (same number for golds and silvers). It is made of pure bronze measuring 55mm in diameter and weighing 80g. Designed by Giuseppe Cassioli the obverse features Nike Goddess of Victory seated above a stadium holding the winner's crown and palm branch with "XI. OLYMPIADE BERLIN 1936" scripted on right. The reverse shows a winner carried by jubilant athletes. Very well-preserved in both color and texture the medal comes in Near Mint condition. Although the recipient and event are unknown (no 1936 gold silver or bronze medals provided this info) the medal survives as an extraordinary Olympic artifact rarely made available to the collecting public. A different bronze medal (with its original presentation case) from these same 1936 Berlin Games sold for $18368 in our most recent Spring 2015 Premier Auction.
