Produced by the National Chicle Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts, the 1935 National Chicle Football set was the first major gum card issue devoted to the professional game. Its 36 cards feature striking artwork, and each reverse offers playing instruction from Eddie Casey, coach of the Boston Redskins and former Harvard coach.
Card #4 features Ed Matesic, a halfback for the Philadelphia Eagles who starred at the University of Pittsburgh. The front shows Matesic cocking his arm to throw a forward pass, wearing a white #12 jersey with blue trim, set against a charming backdrop of a stadium wall and a clock tower. The bright blue sky, orange brick and green field combine for one of the more scenic images in the set.
The reverse focuses on the art of passing, noting "the manner in which Ed Matesic, Philadelphia Eagle half back, has the ball balanced in his hand to throw the forward pass." Casey explains that players with long fingers can grip the laces, while "short fingered players can become good passers by acquiring the knack of laying the ball in palm and finding its centre of balance." Biographical details list Matesic as 23 years old, 6'1" and 195 pounds, from Benwood, West Virginia.
This example retains bright color and strong visual appeal. As noted by the PSA qualifier, the card bears a mark, and it shows corner and edge wear consistent with the assigned grade. The reverse is clean and fully legible. An affordable example from the landmark early football issue. Graded VG 3 (MK) by PSA.
