Presented here is a rare set from the 1934 U.S. Open Golf Championship held June 7-9 at Merion Cricket Clubin Ardmore PA including: a contestant's badge a ticket and a program from the event. It marked the USGA's first of five U.S. Opens to be contested at Merion although the site was popular for previous men'sand women's U.S. Amateurs. Olin Dutra won his only U.S. Open title (one of two majors by the big Spanish-American) coming back from an 8-stroke deficit to beat Gene Sarazen by a stroke. 1934 was also the first year Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson played in a U.S. Open.

There were 146 entries in the '34 Open and each player received acontestant badge like the one offered here. The red and white enameledfront bears the name year and site of the tournament on the front with some chipping to the end of "CONTESTANT". Thereverse is stamped with the manufacturer "Robbins Co. Attleboro Mass". Measures 33 mm longand weighs 16 grams. The bronze colored metallic badge is missing its pin claspon the back and shows significant wear and aging from its 86 years of existence.

The accompanying full ticket was for the second round played on Friday June 8. The yellow 3" square ticket with itsoriginal sting still attached comes in EX-MT condition with a couple faint creases but little to no edge or corner wear. And finally the 8.5 x 11 standard size program completes the great trio of items. The well-bound program does have a significant vertical crease down the front and back cover (looks like it was once folded in half) but internal pages are intact and it appears EX overall. We cannot emphasize enough how difficult it is for a collector to acquire all three of these related vintage golf piece together in one lot.
