Rex Houston Mays Jr. a.k.a. Rex Mays was a former AAA Championship Car race driver. Born in Riverside California in 1913 Rex quickly became the driver to beat at legendary Legion Ascot Speedway in southern California. He won the AAA Pacific Coast Championship in 1934 and 1935 and his winning ways at Ascot led to his chance to run the big cars at Indy in 1934. His second race at Indy was typical of his luck. He won the pole and led until mechanical problems struck shortly after the half-way point. He was killed at the age of 36 in a crash during the only Champ Car race held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds race track in Del Mar California in November 1949. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1995. This lot includes one of his auto-racing-worn Spalding brand aviator helmets. The all-leather helmet is well worn with plenty of mileage to show and its two padded ear protectors remain intact. The A.G. Spalding & Bros Aviation Clothing manufacturers label is sewn into the inside rear of the helmet with a black tag showing style number (950) and size (6 7/8) sewn in immediately below it.
