1933 Goudey was the first major gum card set and remains the most recognizable and coveted pre-war baseball set among vintage collectors. A total of sixty [60!] Hall of Famers are featured in this star-driven issue highlighted by four Babe Ruth and two Lou Gehrig cards – a.k.a. “The Big Six”. This sensational complete set, with all 239 cards graded by PSA, was recently entered into the PSA Set Registry and came is now ranked 20^th overall with a 4.289 Set Rating and 4.377 GPA. This is somewhat deceiving, however, as five of the top 20 sets are missing one or more of the Big Six. Not this one, though. All Ruths and Gehrigs are accounted for with solid grades in the VG 3 to VG-EX 4 range, which would put this set in the top 15 of most valuable registered. In addition, several key Hall of Famers have achieved EX 5 status including both Jimmie Foxx cards, both Mel Otts, Tris Speaker, and #1 Benny Bengough in the always precarious leadoff position. The highest grade is NM 7 and only three cards received lower than a VG-EX 4 rating.

The checklist is supposed to boast 240 total cards, but as any astute collector knows #106 is on the endangered species list. Nap Lajoie was missing from the initial ’33 release and was only issued upon request in 1934 after Goudey received numerous complaints from disgruntled gum chewing collectors. Its scarcity is well-documented, and the set is considered complete without it. Of the top 20 sets in the registry, only eight are 100% complete with Lajoie.
