Offered is a 1933 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth graded PSA FR 1.5 (PSA cert. #175227126). The 1933 Goudey set is one of the most important baseball issues ever produced, and its four Ruth cards are the most coveted cards in the set.
The card features Ruth in the Yankees' famed pinstripes following through on a swing at home plate, with a bright yellow and green ballpark background and a fence and grandstand in the distance. The red "Big League Chewing Gum" banner runs across the bottom of the card. Card #144 was printed in larger quantities than the other Ruth cards, as it appeared on multiple sheets, yet it remains in high demand thanks to its distinctive action design.
The reverse provides Ruth's biography, noting that the Red Sox paid "less than $3,000" for him in 1914 and the Yankees paid about $125,000 six years later, along with his 60-homer season of 1927 and his 1924 batting title. It also notes that he "is 39 years old," dating the text to the 1933-34 period.
This example grades FR 1.5 but presents with a clean, centered image and strong color throughout, with the wear typical of a 90-year-old card, including rounded corners and light creasing. With its strong visual presentation, this card offers an accessible entry point into one of the hobby's most prestigious sets and the most recognizable name in the history of the game.
