From 1933 to 1935 no pitcher dominated the National League like Carl Hubbell. Backed by a Giants team loaded with Hall of Famers and stars like Bill Terry Mel Ott Lefty O’Doul and Travis Jackson Hubbell earned the nickname “the Meal Ticket” because it was a foregone conclusion that any game he pitched he’d win. While that’s an exaggeration it aint too far off the mark - from 1933 to 1935 Hubbell won 67 games led the league in wins shut outs and complete games once ERA twice and averaged 22 wins a year. He also had two complete game victories in the 1933 World Series in which he didn’t allow a single earned run and won the first of his two MVP Awards. And there was also that legendary performance in the 1934 All-Star Game where Hubbell and his screwball struck out Ruth Gehrig Foxx Simmons and Cronin in succession.

This humble well-worn New York Giants cap was donned by King Carl during those tremendous Hall of Fame seasons of 1933-1935. The black and orange cap is more recognizable as the style worn by Willie Mays and company during the 1950’s but the ’33-’35 Giants of Hubbell’s era also wore this sharp-looking style. As you’d expect from one of the game’s hardest working pitchers Hubbell’s ballcap shows tremendous game use. The once black felt has gracefully aged to a dark green hue. The visor has softened into a nice flexible brim. A tear on the right side panel has been repaired most likely a clubhouse fix done at the very time Hubbell was turning the National League on their ear. A small hole is found on the left panel and there is the usual perspiration staining throughout. The top button has some of the felt covering worn off of it but it is intact. The orange embroidered “NY” is intact and remains bright. The leather sweatband shows the expected wear but remains intact. Best of all “C. Hubbell” chain stitched in faded thread is still clearly visible on the sweatband. Any game used apparel from Carl Hubbell is worthy of a display in Cooperstown - to find a cap donned by the great one during his finest seasons is truly a remarkable find.
