A restless adventurer his entire life Herb Hunter punctuated his exciting life to play professional ball in the early 20th Century. He also served with the Navy in both World Wars and he organized three baseball tours of the Orient. The most successful of the latter was staged in 1931 when he assembled a troupe of high-profile Big Leaguers for a sortie on the Japanese Empire. Though not as publicized as similar undertakings (such as 1934 1913 or 1888 for that matter) this was a successful goodwill tour. Surviving from the venture is this rare and impressive panoramic photograph featuring participants from both nations in that 1931 tour. Framed to 38-1/4 x 12-7/8 under cream-colored matting this light sepia-toned photo portrays (41) participants and officials including all (14) American players. Readily recognizable near the far left is Lou Gehrig who unlike his uniformed countrymen is clad in a suit and tie. Mickey Cochrane too is quite familiar. The vintage item has a small vertical tear near the center which has long-since been mended with a strip of transparent tape. Very minor paper loss is visible far from the player likenesses on this otherwise glorious and never before seen photo.
