The 1928 Lucky Strike series of five ballplayer trolly car advertisements are among the most attractive baseball advertising pieces ever produced. Featuring five top players of the day – Lloyd Waner, Paul Waner, Harry Heilmann, Lefty Grove, and Tony Lazzeri – these pieces are the very height point of pre-WWII advertising art. Offered here is the Tony Lazzeri, introduced as "New York Yankees Star Infielder.” In 1928, Lazzeri was in his third full season with the Yankees and had already established himself as a key member of New York’s “Murderer’s Row.” He batted .309 with 28 home runs in 1927 and would hit .328 in 1928 as the Yankees won back-to-back World Championships. The piece itself shows the young Yankees star fielding his position in a dramatic action shot, made all the more dramatic with its dark background, stark lighting, and iconic Lucky Strike bullseye logo. Measuring 10”x20”, the piece shows light wear, most notably in the upper left corner. The colors remain vibrant and bright. Professionally matted and framed in UV glass, making this a most striking work of advertising art. To read an article about this collection from Sports Collectors Daily, click here.
