While most of the athletes depicted in Lucky Strikes 1928 ad campaign were well established stars, A pitcher Lefty Grove was just beginning to demonstrate the stats that would make him a Hall of Famer. In 1927, Grove won 20 games for the first time. In the year this trolly car advertising panel was produced, 1928, Grove won 24 games as the Philadelphia A emerged as an up and coming American League powerhouse. In the next three seasons the A would win three pennants and two World Championships as Lefty Grove established himself as the greatest lefthander in baseball history. In this gorgeous example of 1920s advertising art, the young ace is shown delivering one of his famous fastballs, posed before the iconic Lucky Strike logo. The dark stadium green background makes Grove and his white uniform jump off the surface in dramatic fashion. The surface shows some wear and toning from age. There are several scuffs, most noticeable beside Grove left arm, along the upper left corner and near the bottom right edge. Measuring 10 x20, the piece has been professionally mounted and framed, further enhancing this remarkable example of baseball advertising art.
