“The Manassa Mauler” is ranked in the top ten of virtually every list of the best boxers of all time. Jack Dempsey was the world heavyweight champion from 1919 to 1926 and, along the way, fought everyone from Jess Willard and Luis Firpo to Jack Sharkey and Georges Carpentier. His two fights against Gene Tunney have gone down in boxing lore and represented the passing of the torch between two generations of great fighters. This atmospheric Type 1 photo captures Jack Dempsey training with a heavy bag, demonstrating why The Ring magazine rated him fourth among its Top 100 Greatest Punchers. The photo has been printed to its edge. There is a small piece missing from the bottom left corner and two tears along the right edge. The reverse of the photo has a “TIMES LIBRARY” stamp along with many handwritten notations, tape residue, and several date stamps, the earliest being “Nov. 12, 1928.” The photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded Type 1 Authentic.
