Presented here is a scarce Olympic gold medal from the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Games. Only 254 gold medals were minted (along with 258 silver and 259 bronze) making any winner’s medal from these Games a real treat for collectors. Made of gilt silver with gold plating (as are all post-1912 first place winner medals) it is designed by Giuseppe Cassioli and minted by Dutch State Mint. It measures 55 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick weighing 70 grams. The obverse features Nike Goddess of Victory seated above the stadium holding a winner's crown and palm branch with "IX OLYMPIADE AMSTERDAM 1928" scripted on the right. The reverse shows a winner carried by jubilant athletes. Well-preserved in both color and texture the medal remains in NM condition with some fading to the gold plating. Although the recipient and event are unknown (no 1936 winner’s medal provided this info) the medal survives as an extraordinary Olympic artifact that rarely surfaces in the hobby. As a bonus it comes in an old Dutch cigarette/cigar box (“Ritmeester 20 Livarde”).
