Presented here is an Olympic gold medal from the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Games. Only 254 gold medals were minted (258 silvers and 259 bronzes) making it all the more special to have to opportunity to acquire one in auction. It is actually made of gilt silver (as are all golds after 1912) designed by Giuseppe Cassioli and measures 55mm in diameter and weighs 66g. The obverse features Nike Goddess of Victory seated above the stadium holding a winner's crown and palm branch with "IX OLYMPIADE AMSTERDAM 1928" scripted on the right. The reverse shows a winner carried by jubilant athletes. Very well-preserved in both color and texture the medal remains in Near Mint condition with just a few minor rim nicks and some very tiny black marks on each side. No sign of heavy handling. Although the recipient and event are unknown (no 1928 gold silver & bronze medals provided this info) the medal survives as an extraordinary Olympic artifact something rarely made available to the collecting public.
