Addendum: The three graded cards have been reviewed with updated results.
Offered here from the Yahtzee Box Find is a nice group of twenty cards from the scarce 1921 National Caramel E220 (Series of 120). According to the PSA's online "Card Facts" archives, "each unnumbered card features a black-and-white player likeness within a white border on the card front. The player’s full name, team name, position, and league also appear within the image area." The cards are hand-cut, so sizes can vary from 2" to 2-1/8" by 3-1/4" to 3-1/2". Printed on the backs is "This set consists of pictures of 120 of the leading Base Ball stars of the American and National Leagues. Made only by the National Caramel Company, Lancaster, Penna.”
There are 114 different players and six variations. Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb lead the way in a checklist packed with many Hall of Famers. Two in this lot are Walter Johnson and Herb Pennock, each of whom's dominance on the mound and red carpet path to Cooperstown is well-documented. The third outstanding pitcher in this lot is Urban Shocker, whose mystique and intrigue in the hobby remains unparalleled among early, pre-war ballplayers. One of the last legal spitballers, Shocker was the St. Louis Browns all-time wins leader before joining Pennock on the starting staff for the greatest team in pro sports history, the 1927 Yankees. The very next year, poor Urban, who battled a bad heart condtion all his llfe, succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 37. All three cards are graded by PSA. The final results are VG-EX 4 for Pennock (total pop 17, second highest rated behind one EX 5), VG 3 for Shocker (total pop 5, second highest graded behind a VG+ 3.5), and AUTHENTIC/ALTERED for "The Big Train" (total pop 15, highest VG-EX 4).
The 17 ungraded cards range FR to EX: Hall of Famers George "Bingo" [High Pockets] Kelly (VG/OC) and Harry Heilman [sic, Heilmann] (VG/OC). Other notables are 2 Bob Meusel (GD & FR), Rogers Peckinpaugh (GD/OC w/ taller dims), Charles "Babe" Adams (VG), and Joe Judge (VG/OC). The rest are J.C. Grainey (VG+), "Chick" Fewster (EX), Ivan Olson (VG), Walter Cruise (VG), Byron Harris (VG-EX), Lee Meadows (GD/OC w/ taller dims), Goldie Rapp (VG-EX/OC), George Whitted (FR/OC w/ taller dims), W.M. Jacobson (VG), Bill Doak (FR).
