For the first time in hobby history, each of the four 1919 World Series games played at Cincinnati's Redland Field (Games 1, 2, 6 & 7) are being offered in the same auction, an unprecedented scenario considering how hard it is to find just one stub from any of the eight games played.
The infamous 1919 “Black Sox” Series has come to define the darkest chapter in the national pastime. Eight Chicago White Sox players, including “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, Eddie Cicotte, and Chick Gandil, were later accused of conspiring with gamblers to throw the Series. The scandal led to their lifetime banishment by newly appointed Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis and permanently changed how the game was governed. Surviving tickets from this tainted Fall Classic are scarce and highly sought after. Each one is a physical link to the moment that baseball’s innocence was lost. This stub from Game 6 stands as the highest graded example in the PSA population report, receiving an EX 5 designation among the 15 that have ever been encapsulated. (The next closest is VG 3.)
Game 6, hosted by the Cincinnati Reds at Redland Park on October 7, was one of the more intriguing contests. Facing elimination in the best-of-nine format, Chicago fell behind 4–0 before rallying to win 5–4 in ten innings. Gritty rookie Dickie Kerr, one of the “clean” Sox, went the distance on the mound, and Gandil drove home the winning run in the tenth. Historians have long debated what that comeback meant. Some see it as the conspirators turning on the gamblers after promised payments failed to appear. Others see it as a calculated move to keep the fix from looking too obvious. Either way, this important stub admitted a fan to one of the most scrutinized games ever played, with the five position players among the “Eight Men Out” combining to go 8-for 22 at the plate with five runs and three RBI.
The left side identifies this as a "Pavilion Seat" ticket issued by the "Cincinnati National League Base Ball Club", with "World's Series 1919 Redland Field" printed in black. The "GAME 3" designation is boxed in bold red print. Admission price was $2.00 with a 20-cent war tax. A large "Rain Check" with fine print explanation in black is followed by "The Roessler Bros., Cincinnati" printer credit in red at the bottom. On the right side of the perforated dividing line is the entrance information for Findlay Street in black, with serial number "7256" on the lower right in red. The reverse provides the rain check terms with a facsimile signature of Cincinnati Reds club president August Herrmann and references the Revenue Act of 1918 for resale violators.
Both sides of the beige body with a faint green accented background exhibit firm paper stock, a clean and crease-free surface, bold print, smooth edges, and soft corners. There may never be a more well-preserved stub to surface from this important game. An extraordinary piece of American history in the finest condition extant. Encapsulated PSA EX 5 (highest graded, pop one).
It should be noted that no full unused tickets from the controversial 1919 World Series are known to exist. Vintage baseball ticket stubs from this era often featured a main body, a gate/turnstile stub section, and a rain check coupon. This is considered a complete stub with two sections as opposed to a torn partial stub with just one remaining, making it far more valuable. A complete Game 1 stub graded PSA GD 2 recently sold for over $30,000. In 2025, a PSA 2 stub from the clinching Game 8 sold for nearly $60,000.
