For the first time in hobby history, each of the four 1919 World Series games played at Cincinnati's Redland Field (Games 1, 2, 6 & 7) are being offered in the same auction, an unprecedented scenario considering how hard it is to find just one stub from any of the eight games played.

No event in baseball history has ever carried as much weight and intrigue as the 1919 World Series, the infamous Fall Classic that branded the Chicago White Sox as the “Black Sox” and nearly toppled our national pastime. Offered here is a rare Game 2 ticket stub from the tainted series graded FR 1.5 by PSA.

Played October 2, 1919, at Cincinnati’s Redland Field, the Reds won the ballgame by a 4–2 score to take a 2–0 series lead. Sox starter Lefty Williams, normally a pitcher with excellent control, suddenly lost command in the fourth inning when he issued three walks to set up a three-run Reds rally capped by Larry Kopf’s two-run triple. Cincinnati’s Slim Sallee pitched a complete game, and the Reds won despite being outhit 10-to-4. Williams was later revealed to be one of the eight “Black Sox” players who conspired with gamblers to throw the Series. Even at the time, his uncharacteristic wildness raised suspicion. Catcher Ray Schalk was reportedly so furious that he confronted Williams after the game. The "Eight Men Out", which included "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver and Eddie Cicotte, would all receive lifetime bans from baseball by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

The attendee with this ancient ticket sat in the "Lower Grand Stand, Sec. H Roq C Seat 18" and entered the stadium through the Main Entrance on Findlay Street; these details are all printed on the right side. The left side of the perforated dividing line has "Cincinnati National League Base Ball Club" and "World's Series 1919 Redland Field" printed in black. "GAME 2" is boxed in red print. Admission price was $5.00 with a 50-cent war tax. A large "Rain Check" with its fine print explanation in black is followed by "The Roessler Bros., Cincinnati" printer credit in red at the bottom. The reverse provides the rain check terms with a facsimile signature of Cincinnati Reds club president August Herrmann and references the Revenue Act of 1918.

Both sides of the beige body show aged paper stock with rounded corners and soft edges. Two staples marks at the top limited the ceiling grade of this stub, although its relatively clean surface – save for a brown stain near the bottom left corner – and bold print certainly make it deserving of proud display. An important gem for any serious ticket collector, this example –considered complete with the two intact sections – is one of 33 encapsulated stubs in the PSA pop report. Only eight are superior to its PSA FR 1.5 grade.
