A fabulous image of the ringleader of the infamous Chicago “Black Sox” as captured by the greatest of all baseball photographers, Charles Conlon. This photograph was taken during 1916, Gandil’s only season with Cleveland. He would be traded to the White Sox the following year, setting in motion the events leading to baseball’s greatest scandal – the throwing of the 1919 World Series. A truly outstanding example of Conlon’s work made all the more desirable due to its full white borders, as most of his surviving Type 1 images have been cropped. The reverse has the Charles M. Conlon Evening Telegram New York stamp along with “GANDIL (Cleveland)” handwritten in pencil. The photograph measures 8” x 10” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
