Few images capture "Shoeless" Joe Jackson with the immediacy of this original news service photograph, taken circa 1914 while Jackson patrolled the outfield for the Cleveland Naps. Caught in an impromptu hitting exhibition before a cluster of watching teammates and a grandstand of curious fans, Jackson appears not in uniform but in a suit, tie, and cap, gripping his bat with the same fluid, hands-low swing that Ty Cobb himself called the best in baseball. That bat is widely identified as "Black Betsy," the dark-stained hickory club Jackson used throughout his career and one of the most storied bats in the sport's history.

Issued by the Newspaper Enterprise Association, the photograph's reverse bears contemporary period stamps, including an N.E.A. reference department marking dated May 1914 and a later 1919 notation, tracing its path through the wire service archives during the height, and soon after the infamy, of Jackson's career. Jackson's .356 lifetime batting average remains the third-highest in major league history, yet his banishment following the 1919 Black Sox scandal makes surviving, well-documented photography from his playing days exceptionally scarce. PSA/DNA has authenticated this 10.25” by 6.75” image as a Type I photograph, developed from the original negative within the era it was taken. A rare, candid window into the game's most tragic superstar, captured at the peak of his still-unblemished career.
