The T3 tobacco premiums were the most dramatic major card set ever produced. Issued more than a century ago these mail-in tobacco premiums were and still are unprecedented in their enormity and artistry. Their size proportionately increased the likelihood of creases and other damage over time making it very difficult for discerning collectors to find even mid-grade examples.
Presented here is arguably the finest condition example known of one of the two most coveted cards in the T3 series. This superb Christy Mathewson 1911 T3 Turkey Red card captures the iconic Matty in a classic pitching pose. This cabinet sized card has outstanding eye appeal superior to its unsurpassed technical grade. Mathewson's image is perfectly rendered in vibrant color. Extremely light wear is evident at the tips of the corners though they still retain much of their original square shape. The card's surfaces both on the front and on the checklist back are problem-free and the centering is near perfect. Being one of only four EX-MT PSA 6 examples with none graded higher it may be a long while before another opportunity presents itself to acquire a comparable example of this pre-war trophy card.
