The 1911 T205 Gold Border set is celebrated as one of the most beautiful tobacco issues ever made, with its ornate designs, team logos and distinctive gilded borders. Those same gold borders are notoriously prone to chipping, making well-preserved examples genuinely scarce. This attractive card features Frank "Home Run" Baker of the Philadelphia Athletics.
Baker earned his famous nickname in the 1911 World Series, when he hit pivotal home runs in consecutive games off future Hall of Famers Rube Marquard and Christy Mathewson. He led the American League in home runs four straight seasons from 1911 to 1914 and anchored Connie Mack's legendary "$100,000 Infield." He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1955.
The front portrays Baker in his striped Athletics cap within a diamond frame, set against a rich blue background with the A's elephant logo at upper left and crossed bats, a ball, a base and a catcher's mask below his name banner. The reverse carries a biography describing him as "the tall and hard-hitting third baseman of the champion Athletics," along with his 1908 through 1910 statistics. Notably, this example features the scarcer Honest Long Cut back, one of the tougher advertising variations in the T205 set.
The gold borders remain largely intact with only light wear, and the front colors are vivid and well registered. Mild corner wear is consistent with the grade, and the reverse is clean and legible. A wonderful Hall of Fame T205 with a desirable back. Graded EX 5 by PSA.
