S74 Silks are satin-like "cards" that were distributed as premium inserts in various 1910-11 American Tobacco Company products, coming in two versions: "White" (sometimes identified as S74-1) and "Colored" (S74-2). White Silks measure 1-7/8" by 3" and initially came with paper backings advertising one of the four ATC brands (Old Mill, Turkey Red, Helmar and Red Sun). These paper backs are usually missing from their silk counterparts, as is the case here, due to separation from age. Colored Silks measure 1-7/8" by 3-1/2" and were issued without backings, instead showing printed ads at the bottom. Featuring the same player portrait images used in the T205 Gold Border set, the White checklist consists of 92 different players as opposed to 122 in the Colored set.

The biggest chase card/silk in this rare and ancient set is Ty Cobb. This hobby-fresh “White” version was recently graded “Authentic” by SGC. Due to its missing tobacco brand paper backing, this is the highest assessment SGC will give. Otherwise, its well-preserved condition would easily warrant a VG or better grade. Usually there is significant fraying of the delicate strands along the top and bottom edges that looks rough and disorganized. The fraying on this one is flat and consistent, giving it vintage charm and wonderful eye appeal. Two horizontal creases must be noted, but you will be hard-pressed to find a better “Authentic” example. Only three other Cobbs (missing backing) exist in the entire SGC pop report.
