Great looking 52-card 1909 James Jeffries "Boxing Playing Cards" complete set in the original box. The Playing cards were issued as a souvenir to accompany the first "Fight of the Century" between the undefeated former Champion Jeffries and the reigning World Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson. At the time of the card set's release Jeffries had come out of a 6 year retirement as the first "White Hope" attempting to take back the crown from great black boxer Jack Johnson. Although nearly 35-years-old and greatly out of shape Jeffries managed to go 15 rounds before losing the first fight in his career to Johnson. On the fronts of the 52 playing cards are actual photos of the leading boxes of the day and the past including James Jeffries John L. Sullivan Bob Fitzsimmons James J. Corbett Abe Attell Tommy Burns Tom Sharkey and Stanley Ketchell. Jack Johnson does not have an individual card but is show fighting McVey another black boxer. Also featured are numerous images of fight action from many different bouts with many different fighters. An image of a smiling Jeffries decked out in suit and derby hat appears on the back of each card. An additional card is included showing the Jeffries Building in Los Angeles and advertising the cards sets are available for the price of $1.00. Cards rate about EX or a little better overall with a few better and a worse. The original outside box presents about VG with the inside box being ex or a little better. Outstanding photographic look into the world of professional boxing from the early 1900's.
